Physical parts in. Editable CAD out.
Oscar, our AI copilot, reads a 3D scan like an engineer. It creates a parametric CAD from the scan data that you can open, edit, and send to manufacturing.

01The problem
Your scanner captures the part. You still cannot use it.
01
Interpret
AI Agents recognizes the features, entities, and dimensions from the scan data.
02
Rebuild
Performs CAD operations as interpreted and measurements become clean, and editable
03
Review
Oscar suggests the design intent, and the engineer approves it.
02How it works
From mesh to model, the way an engineer builds it.
An illustrative view of our scan-to-CAD workflow.
01
Start with the scan
Oscar analyzes the scan and the features
Example scan: 800,000 points
Captured surface
02
Rebuilds the geometry
Our AI agents find the axes, planes, profiles and creates a constrained sketch.
Example: sets rotational axis · constrains geometry and dimension
CAD operations, Extrude, revolve, etc,
03
Verify the design intent
Oscar flags anything uncertain for the engineer.
Example: fit, form and function
Engineer approves/rejects design
04
Editable in Native CAD
Design/modify in your existing CAD package
Example: SolidWorks, Catia, Fusion, etc.

03What we rebuild
Any part. Any profile.
We reverse engineer any mechanical part, from a single scan data to a complete assembly and product family. We measure every dimension and rebuild it as a parameter that you can edit and bring the part, into your native CAD ecosystem.

| 02 | Machined components |
| 03 | Casting and Forging |

| 05 | Freeform surfaces and bodies |
| 06 | Legacy parts with no drawings |
04Oscar copilot
Meet Oscar, your reverse-engineering copilot.
Oscar is a team of AI agents that reverse-engineers parts like an engineer. It reads the scan, rebuilds the part feature by feature, preserve the design intent and verifies the result with the engineer.

Done. Feature tree updated.
Keeps the construction tree, not just the shape.
You see the tree in your browser. When you connect oscar to native CAD, The Oscar rebuilds the same tree and allows the user to edit, modify, assemble etc., for further development & manufacturing
05Engineer review
Oscar proposes. Engineer decides.
A scan cannot tell you everything. Wear hides the original dimensions. Oscar flags anything uncertain and attaches the evidence for an engineer decide.

Common questions

On the blog: STEP or IGES? Which CAD file format to ask for
Q01What is OriginShape?
OriginShape builds Oscar, an AI copilot for reverse engineering. Oscar’s AI agents read a 3D scan like an engineer. They rebuild the part, feature by feature, as CAD that you can edit and export as STEP or IGES. They flag anything uncertain for review. Oscar runs in your browser, can connect to FreeCAD, and uses OriginShape’s own AI models, Origin One and Origin One Super. Oscar is patent pending.
Q02What kinds of parts and profiles do you work with?
We work with shafts and turned parts, brackets, housings and plates, extrusions and profiles, castings and freeform surfaces, and legacy parts with no drawings. If you can scan the part, we can discuss a rebuild into parametric CAD. The example on this page is a 120 mm stepped shaft.
Q03What does “parametric CAD” mean in the output?
Oscar builds the model from explicit, editable dimensions, not from a wrapped mesh. Change a diameter and the geometry updates. You get CadQuery code plus STEP geometry. In the example, Ø36.00 mm is the parameter d2.
Q04How is this different from mesh-to-solid conversion in my CAD package?
Converters copy the scanned surface together with its wear and noise. Our AI agents rebuild the intended design instead. They flag anything uncertain for review and do not average it into the model. In the example, the scan becomes one revolved solid with 3 diameters and a 21.80° taper.
Q05What scan data do you work from?
We work from laser scans, structured light, CT, or CMM and probe data. Common formats are STL, OBJ, E57, and PTX/PTS. No scan yet? Tell us about the part, and we will plan the capture with you. The example scan on this page has 8,000 points.
Q06What exactly do you deliver?
We deliver readable CadQuery code, STEP geometry, and evidence for each key dimension. STEP imports into SolidWorks, Fusion, Onshape, and NX. We send the parametric code together with the STEP file, because STEP carries geometry only. For the example shaft, that is 4 key dimensions: Ø24, Ø36 and Ø28 mm, and 120 mm overall.
Q07Which CAD tools does Oscar work with?
Oscar runs in your browser. You can also connect Oscar to FreeCAD, where Oscar builds the construction tree natively. Direct connections to Fusion, SolidWorks, and Onshape will follow soon. Until then, import the STEP or IGES file into those tools or into any other CAD tool.
Q08Can a scan recover the original design intent?
A scan records the part as it is today, and wear can hide the original dimensions. We flag those dimensions and confirm them with drawings, extra measurements, or your engineering judgment. In the example, Oscar flags the shoulder position at z −35.00 mm for review.
Q09Does the process use AI?
Yes. Oscar uses OriginShape’s own AI models, Origin One and Origin One Super. Its AI agents make each rebuild decision the way an engineer does. We check their output against a deterministic baseline. We judge accuracy on engineering criteria, not on the confidence of the AI models. The agents work in 4 steps: datums, design intent, features, and dimensions.
